Catalonia is sometimes referred to the California of Europe. Its capital, Barcelona, is growing in importance as a port for Southern Europe, and over 600 US companies currently have operations in Catalonia serving the Southern Europe, Middle East, and Africa region. Even as debate continues in Spain over Catalonia’s  movement toward secession, its economy has continued to grow, accounting for a large share of Spanish GDP and a significant share of Foreign Direct Investment in Europa.

Minister Baiget will provide a perspective on Catalonia’s business landscape, and its connection to the US and California in particular, as well as an update on Catalonia’s current political context and on future business opportunities.

San Jose Mayor Sam Liccardo will be leading the conversation.

California—with its diverse economy and history of innovation—is well positioned to capture future growth in many manufacturing sectors, but state and local governments will need more targeted policy tools to stimulate commercialization of new products, close the workforce gap, and incentivize more manufacturers to locate within the state. While the offshoring of production and automation technology have fundamentally transformed the industry, high-skilled manufacturing jobs are essential to a balanced, competitive economy. Today, advanced manufacturing techniques, the growing maker movement, and a renewed national interest in research and development have led to a reinvention of the manufacturing industry.
